Vastu Shastra

Classical Vedic architectural science, encoded from primary sources — the Brihat Samhita and cross-checked modern practice — not assumptions. Every claim here traces to a cited source, and genuine disagreements between schools are shown rather than hidden.

What Is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra is the traditional Hindu system of architecture — rules for orienting and arranging a building so it works in harmony with the eight cardinal/intercardinal directions, the five elements (Pancha Mahabhuta), and the classical Vastu Purusha Mandala, a symbolic grid said to represent the cosmic being underlying every site.

The core, near-universal rules are simple: keep the North-East light, open, and low; keep the South-West heavy, high, and stable; keep the centre (Brahmasthan) clear; and place fire (the kitchen) and water carefully so they never share a corner. Everything else — room-by-room placement, the entrance's exact position, and remedies for existing defects — builds on that foundation.
