Ashtakoot Guna Milan ("eight-fold quality matching") is the classical Vedic method for checking compatibility between two people before marriage, based on both partners' Moon Nakshatra and Moon sign at birth. The Eight Kootas

The system checks eight separate factors (Koota), each worth a fixed maximum number of points, adding up to a total of 36:

  • Varna (1 point) — spiritual/temperamental compatibility
  • Vashya (2 points) — mutual attraction and control
  • Tara (3 points) — birth-star compatibility and general wellbeing
  • Yoni (4 points) — sexual and instinctual compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5 points) — friendship between the Moon-sign lords
  • Gana (6 points) — temperament grouping (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa)
  • Bhakoot (7 points) — the relative position of the two Moon signs
  • Nadi (8 points) — health and genetic compatibility of offspring

Reading the Total Score

A total of 18 out of 36 is generally considered the minimum acceptable threshold in classical practice, with 24+ regarded as good and 32+ as excellent. A very low score doesn't automatically mean incompatibility — but it does flag areas worth discussing further, ideally with an astrologer who can look at the full charts, not just the Guna score.

Nadi and Bhakoot Dosha

Two of the eight Kootas — Nadi and Bhakoot — carry special weight. If either scores zero, classical texts treat it as a "Dosha" (flaw) serious enough that some traditions recommend against the match regardless of the total score, though many schools also recognize specific exceptions (Bhanga/cancellation conditions) where the dosha doesn't apply. This is a genuinely nuanced area — worth a real conversation with an astrologer rather than a purely mechanical read of the number.

What Guna Milan Doesn't Tell You

Ashtakoot matching is one classical lens, based only on the Moon's position — it doesn't evaluate the rest of either birth chart (Lagna, other planets, Dashas). Many astrologers treat it as a first-pass screen, followed by a fuller chart comparison for a serious relationship decision.
