The story traces back to Goddess Parvati fashioning Lord Ganesha to guard her chamber, and Lord Shiva unknowingly beheading him before restoring him with the head of an elephant. Sankashti ("deliverance from a crisis") fasting recalls Ganesha's own crisis and its resolution, and is observed to seek his help in overcoming obstacles.
